P.S. I intentionally included ‘leftovers’ in the title because I don’t want you thinking the worst without reading.
Before you get your knickers in a twist, the Yahoo we all know isn’t changing its name, but a part of the company that remained after the Verizon sales is getting a weird new name — Altaba (The Yoruba girl in thought AltBaba at first, lol).
Apparently, when Verizon agreed to buy the company for $4.8 billion in July 2016, it planned to purchase just Yahoo’s core Internet businesses, which include its email service, sports verticals, and various apps. What’s left of the embattled company would essentially be its ownership in Chinese Internet giant Alibaba — this is the part that is getting a new name — which will become an investment firm, not an internet company
The thought process behind the name choice? It is a combination of the words “alternative and Alibaba.”
Apart from the name change, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is to step down from its board but will continue to be CEO.
