Sony No Longer Cares About the Smartphone Market; Looks to VR & MR.

I would surely hate to see them go, but if we were to take Sony’s President Kazuo Hirai words as the gospel, then it seems the Smartphone’s reign would soon be over.

According to the interview he had with the Australian Finance Review, although he expected his phone division to be commercially viable, he no longer cares whether or not Sony becomes one of the top 5 smartphone makers in the world, what he is more interested in is the next big thing — Virtual reality and Mixed reality. He said it was likely that the smartphone form of today will not be the consumers’ choice in 10 years and that alongside figuring out the next stage, Sony was more excited by evolutions elsewhere such as commercial-grade virtual reality. In other words, Sony is very interested in VR and MR and believes it already has an advantage in that area.

Do I think VR & MR are the next big thing?

I think that Virtual reality is basically a content delivery tool and not something a consumer would use every day — although once VR headsets become affordable for the common people, it could really take off.  However, what I feel could be the next big thing is Augmented Reality (AR) or even better, Mixed Reality (MR) as these technologies have the ability to replace your smartphones via devices such as smart glasses or head mounts.

Now back to Sony, all I have to say is this —may the Force of VR & MR be with you:

I think Sony wants to use VR and AR as a seeing point for their devices… Since the play station is already a VR machine…

…WELL,ITS BEEN A LONG TIME THAT I’VE BEEN SO SCEPTICAL ABOUT SONY’S CONTINUOUS STRUGGLE WITH THE SMARTPHONE MARKET.
IN MY OWN OPINION, SONY WILL LINGER ON A BIT WITH SMART PHONES AND PUSH SO HARD WITH A.I AND V.R..
