I really hope they are not being racist. However, If the reports of Leslie Miley can be relied on, it means they are.
According to his post on Medium, Leslie Miley claims he quit the company over ‘diversity issues’. He was among the people who was laid off recently, but he is claiming that he had already quit the company because of worries about diversity. In his own words.
“There were moments that caused me to question how and why a company whose product has been used as an agent of revolutionary social change did not reflect the diversity of thought, conversation, and people in its ranks.”
Miley described a meeting at the company in which a senior engineering executive suggested using potential job candidates’ names to predict their ethnicity and determine where in the hiring process these candidates were falling out. (Source: Recode)
With Miley’s departure, Twitter will no longer have any managers, directors, or VP’s of colour in engineering or product management. Miley wrote that his low moment came when he asked a senior member of Twitter’s management “about what specific steps Twitter engineering was taking to increase diversity”. Management allegedly responded with “diversity is important, but we can’t lower the bar”.
Twitter denied the claims in a press statement, saying it was
“Committed to making substantive progress in making Twitter more diverse and inclusive. This commitment includes the expansion of our inclusion and diversity programs, diversity recruiting, employee development, and resource group-led initiatives. Beyond just disclosing our workforce representation statistics, we have also publicly disclosed our representation goals forwomen and under-represented minorities for 2016, making us the largest tech company to put hard numbers around its diversity commitment,” a spokesperson said.
Who are we to believe? By the way, this isn’t the first time the issue of Diversity is coming up with Twitter.
