Another One ‘Might’ Bite the Dust: Could 2018 Be the (Official) End of Sony Mobile in Africa?!

Is Sony Mobile still in Africa?

Based on their activities on Social media (especially in Nigeria), one might be inclined to think they are not.

The truth is, they are actually present in 2 African countries — South Africa and South Africa Nigeria.

But that’s by the side.

According to rumors, Sony might “shut down its operations and offices” in Africa by October.

A rumor that has been stylishly confirmed by a Sony representative. In their words:

“As part of our ongoing measures to drive profitable growth, we are carefully monitoring the market situation and reviewing our business feasibility in Middle East, Africa and Turkey.”

I am not sure if ‘reviewing our business feasibility’ also means ‘shutting down operations’ but based on previous reports, mobile sales for the brand has been a big drag on the company’s profit due to falling sales globally.

A look at the top-performing brands in Africa

The outcome of the review is not certain yet, but even though Sony may not have sold a ton of phones or even have a brand presence, it did have a small group of fans in Nigeria. Fans that would be upset to see them go. Fans like myself:

… WELL, IT IS A REALITY OF WHAT MUST HAPPEN. SONY HAS BEEN DOING THE HTC THING FOR A LONG TIME. PRICES NOT COMPETITIVE, MARKETING BAD, RELEASE NOT GENERAL, FINGERPRINT SCANNER NOT IN USA AND SO MANY MADNESS LIKE THAT. GOOD RIDDANCE TO GOOD RUBBISH…
