Did You Know You Can Use Your ‘Android Phone’ as a Measuring Tape? But the Main Question is, Can Your Phone Handle It?

Before now, you would need to get a Tango/Pixel device to measure surfaces using your phone, but:

However:

Yes, Google just made the Measure app— which debuted in 2016  and can be used to discern length or height for items both large and small

—Available to numerous non-tango devices, but it’s only accessible to ARcore devices!

What is ARcore, you ask? Well, it’s a software development kit developed by Google that allow for mixed reality applications to be built, it makes use of the sensors and hardware that is already on the device to offer AR experience.

To find out if your phone supports AR, try to download the Measure app by clicking here. If it does support ARcore, the app should download in no time, but if it doesn’t, you’d get a message similar to this one:

This was from the Infinix Zero 5

So, what devices support ARcore? Well, I tried it on my Nokia 7 Plus, and it works flawlessly, but it would also work if you have one of these phones listed below: (This list isn’t extensive, though):

Asus

  • Pixel and Pixel XL
  • Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL
  • Nexus 6P
  • Nexus 5X

Back to the question, was your phone compatible?

If it wasn’t:

You can always download this app — Ruler— to measure stuff using your phone, but you are only limited to small items.
