Update: It’s Official! Vivo Has Announced Nex — A Smartphone with a Pop-up Selfie Camera, But….

Update: Vivo has officially announced this:

Yes, it’s a smartphone that comes with a Pop-up camera, I talked about it 4 months ago (Article below).

They chose the name — NEX, a smartphone that comes with a screen-to-body ratio of 91.24 percent, and most importantly, doesn’t come with a notch!

As far as specs are concerned you get a Snapdragon 845 processor, 8GB of RAM, a 4,000mAh battery, 256GB of storage, a 6.59-inch 1080p+ OLED display, a 12MP main camera with an amazing f1.8 aperture along with a secondary 5MP lens. The pop-up selfie camera is 8MP and it also comes with an earphone jack.

How much?

Well, a lot! About  $780 (N280,000+) type of a lot. There’s also a cheaper model with a Snapdragon 710, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage.

What do you think?

Spoilers:

Vivo is not strange to launching new technologies for their phones—recall that they were the first to launch an in-display fingerprint sensor—now they have taken it a step further by launching a concept phone called Apex which uses half of the screen as an in-display fingerprint scanner.

The phone itself comes with a 6-inch screen with a near bezel-less display.
The frame around the face is so slim, about 1.8mm, that there is no room for the front-facing camera. To solve this dilemma, Vivo has introduced a front-facing camera that literally pops up from the phone’s edge
Dope, right?!
Asides from having a camera that pops, Vivo has also included a vibrating audio that vibrates to create sounds for your videos, calls, and gaming. This is somewhat similar to the sound techniques used in the Xiaomi Mi Mix, but Vivo calls its version SoundCasting

The company only revealed a couple of specs which can be seen below:

  • A 6-inch screen
  • 2,160×1,080 resolution
  • 8-megapixel front-facing camera
  • In-screen fingerprint reader
  • Dual rear camera
  • Hi-Fi audio chip.

What do you think of Vivo’s latest concept phone? Is it something you’d love to buy?

  1. Looks good, in display finger scanner sounds OK too but I don’t like the idea of a camera that gets to pop out, seems like something that could give issues on the long run.

… WELL, IT LOOKS NICE. THIS IS A NICE CONCEPT. BUT WILL THE POPPING SELFIE 🤳🏾 SHOOTER HAVE A FLASHLIGHT 🔦 AND WHEN WILL THIS REALLY BECOME REALITY?
THE INPRINT SCANNER WILL MAKE SENSE DUE TO THE ESTATE IT WILL COVER.
    VIVO IS ON THE RISE…

  3. I love the full Display and the wideness will be perfect to watch films and play games as well.

Wow… This is really cool from a company like vivo.. . I hope they keep it up

  5. Still not a fan of this type of pop up design on a device. Anyways it’s different strokes for different folks. Let’s keep hands crossed and see how it will be received by consumers

  6. MoonLight says:

That’s a very nice looking device but what happens when you accidentally drop it while taking a selfie?

    1. ALMB says:

Vivo says they’ve tested the camera 50.000 times and it can withstand a weight of 45kgs without breaking

  7. Barry Palmer says:

LG, Oneplus, Xiaomi and Huawei should learn how to be innovative. Not just copying design from iPhone and upgrading Ram & ROM, and camera quality. Nice one from Vivo.

  8. Adegbenro says:

I initially thought it was overpriced. Checking Galaxy S9 and S9 + prices show that it’s competitively priced. I think several OEMs have decided to compete more with Apple and Samsung in the flagship phone sector. Let’s see how the Vivo Nex stands up to everyday usage.

  9. The specs are mwaaah…*kisses*… Nice one from vivo…

  10. ALMB says:

The specs and pricing are fine, but that camera popping up the top of the phone doesn’t seem too durable, and that vibrating screen… No thanks, I’ll take the notch. I’m more interested in the Xiaomi Mi8 Explorer.

  11. Fhemi says:

Good concept but too fancy! Do we actually need a camera to pop up before taking pictures? What if the mechanism get faulty? Anyway I’m impress with how far Vivo are trying out new ideas and concepts.
