Remember how we were all excited when this news broke?
Many Nigerians after that news:
It turns out we shouldn’t have gotten excited.
According to a report by two Google security team members, most Phishers using Gmail are actually Nigerians.
During their research, they were able to detect more than 10,000 phishing kits in use between March 2016 and February 2017. These kits were used in stealing at least 12 million account credentials, and yeah, Mueller and Frierson — the two security experts, found that 41 percent of the account hijackers caught using Gmail to phish for log-ins were from Nigeria, and 50 percent of them were targeting people in the United States.
In their words:
We find that 41.5% of exfiltration points for phishing kits were last accessed in Nigeria, followed in popularity by the United States, Morocco, and South Africa
Nigeria isn’t the only one on the list:
But can you see the percentage difference between Nigeria and other countries?
To be honest, if this wasn’t from Google, I’d probably say that this is another attempt to put Nigeria in a bad light (Not like we need any help in that department cc @Buhari), but here’s another school of thought, what if a large percentage of the 41% mentioned are foreigners using various VPN services to mask their location?
