If you’ve been following the Cambridge Analytica story, then you already know how they used the data gleaned from 50 million Facebook users to sway election results in America. In the wake of these revelations, Guardian UK has also uncovered how Cambridge Analytica was hired by a billionaire to sway the election results by digging dirt on the opposition leader.
They were paid about $2.8 million in 2015 by the Nigerian billionaire and according to the report.
“It was the kind of campaign that was our bread and butter, We’re employed by a billionaire who’s panicking at the idea of a change of government and who wants to spend big to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
Unlike the US/Kenyan elections, Cambridge didn’t use only Facebook, instead, they worked with Israeli Hackers who brought a USB stick reportedly filled with hacked personal emails, which included private information, including potential medical records, about then-Nigerian opposition leader Muhammadu Buhari, who is now president.
Why Israeli Hackers, you ask?
Asides from the ‘billionaire’ involvement, the report pointed out that Israel didn’t like the idea of Buhari as president, and the hackers in partnership with Cambridge Analytica were used to spread propaganda messages about the President. Now here is another interesting fact, a report in 2013 revealed that Goodluck Jonathan awarded a $40m contract to an Israeli company to allegedly monitor the Internet communication by Nigerians, the name of the company is called Elbit Systems. However, I am not sure if Elbit Systems is linked with these hackers, especially considering the fact that the report from Guardian claims that Jonathan Goodluck was not aware of the manipulation done on his behalf.
So, how did the story end?
Luckily, staff members were alarmed by the information presented at the meeting, and the fear of being caught made them refuse to implement the hacked data into their campaign.
