PSA: You Will Soon Be Able to Make Skype Calls on Feature Phones, Because, Next Billion Users!

The biggest tech players are hopping on the “Next Billion” users train and Microsoft doesn’t want to be left out!

They are set to launch a trimmed down version of Skype that will reduce the memory, network, and storage demands of devices running Android Ice Cream Sandwich through Lollipop. The end goal is to ensure that the app will be easier to use on low-end phones with low inbuilt RAM—feature phones.

Why now?
Simple, Microsoft, just like Google and Facebook, wants to make the world’s information universally accessible by ensuring that both the woman in Kano and the geek in Silicon Yaba can have equal access to the Internet’s wealth. There is also the fact that Microsoft cannot afford to lose a large chunk of its potential audience who use feature phones— about 42% of the global Android population.

So, when would you be able to download this?
No date has been set, but Microsoft claims that the updated app will be available worldwide in the “coming weeks.”

That’s a good one.. I use a phone with 1gb of ram so I can relate well to this update. Most of my apps are Lite version + Hermit is helping out too. Less memory, less space nd less power consumption.

  3. Me patiently waiting for the update.
