Google wants to make the Pixel the best phone in the world, to do this, they’ve purchased the team behind the design of last year’s Pixel phone from HTC, which means that they now have a non-exclusive use of HTC’s intellectual property rights.
All for $1.1 billion.
So, what does this mean?
- HTC’s smartphone business isn’t dead
(Take that Kaybang).
- Half of the 4,000 people in the R&D team at HTC will be joining Google.
- The remaining R&D team will focus on HTC’s own smartphone brand as well as VR technology.
- This deal will make Google a manufacturer of its own phones.
Bear in mind that this isn’t the first time Google has taken a stake in a smartphone manufacturer (cc @Motorola), and no one is sure why it will be successful this time around.
