The Phantom 6 Plus Review: The Beast Of Tecno's Nation + Ladipo, Lagos As Captured Through Its Lens

We have already established the fact that Tecno’s self-proclaimed ‘Beast’ doesn’t look like a beast in the slightest.
tecno-phantom-6-unboxing29
… But does it perform like a Beast?

TECNO PHANTOM 6 PLUS REVIEW

BOOT TIME

I’d be kick-starting this with the boot test. I won’t lie, thanks to this Plenty startup effect or paparazzi as I’d like to call it:
ezgif-329773282
I felt that the Phantom 6 Plus would take a longer time to boot. Surprisingly, it took about 31 seconds. While booting off took about 6 seconds, which placed the Phantom 6 Plus in a good position in the Leaderboard.

THE UI? MELANIN POPPING!

The Phantom 6 Plus’s UI is all shades of Melanin! A little bit different from what you get in the previous HiOS
tecno-phantom-6-plus-ui
The entire UI is a blend of chocolate and grayish black  that got me loving it instantly because it reminds me of the dark skinned ladies of this world (Myself included?)

The icons have also gotten a slight makeover.

DISPLAY

The Phantom 6 Plus has a 6-inch FHD Display; you get an excellent output indoors:
tecno-phantom-6-plus-display
Also, thanks to the UI, you won’t need to turn the brightness to the maximum to be able to see the device outdoors.

HOW HEAVY IS THE BEAST?

I paired the Phantom 6 Plus with the Note 3 which is also a 6-inch device. The results?
tecno-phantom-6-plus-size
The Phantom 6 Plus is slightly heavier than the Infinix Note 3.
Infinix Note 3 Unboxing18
The  Smart case also added to the weight of the Phantom 6 Plus.

HOW GOOD IS THE AUDIO?

Err, good enough! I paired the Tecno Phantom 6 Plus with Huawei’s P9 Lite. I played Hillsong United’s Oceans on both devices. At the end of the test, it was noticed that the Huawei P9 Lite had a slighltly louder output than the 6 Plus.

That is not to say that the Phantom 6 Plus’s sound isn’t great, but the Phantom 5’s audio output is better.

ALL THE BLOATWARE.

The Tecno Phantom 6 Plus comes with a whopping 64GB ROM with the HiOS and bloatware already taking about 12GB. I did notice that the CAM apps, including CamScanner and CamCard, have been included in this list. Other bloatware remains the same.

YAYYY IT’S SELFIE TIME!!!

Let me tell you one thing about me, (P.S. Watch out for a QnA post coming soon), I am camera shy, aka I don’t like taking pictures, aka I am not that photogenic and all. Which is one of the reasons I don’t take selfies with the devices I review, but.. I made an exception for the Phantom 6 Plus and the Huawei P9 Lite! Did it disappoint me?
At first, I thought:

img_20160930_173549

No, OIS?!

But after several shots, I started liking the outputs
img_20160930_173604

So, I decided to be goofy, because why not?!
img_20160930_173434

However, when I switched on the front flash, I realized that even though it isn’t a soft flash, the results ain’t bad either, but I prefer my “without flash” look:
img_20160930_173709
The issues I noticed with the camera is the lack of OIS and the fact that it doesn’t do so well under low-light.

 THE BEAST’S TEMPERATURE.

Unlike the Note 3, the Tecno Phantom 6 Plus doesn’t come with any Liquid cooling feature, which means that the phone might get hot thanks to its metal frame. To prove this, I ran my usual testing, which saw me playing several games for about 44 minutes with the data, flashlight, wifi, and Bluetooth switched on. The results?
before-and-after
What this means is that the Phantom 6 Plus may noticeably heat, but only marginally.

HOW FAST DOES IT CHARGE?

The Type-C cable also packs a Lightspeed charge. The test I carried out saw the 6 Plus charge from 1% to 100% in 1hr 50 minutes.

HOW IS THE BATTERY LIFE ON THE BEAST?

Good enough! It would last you all through the day of moderate use.
Using it extensively would see it drain, but not as bad as you think.  Here are screenshots after playing call of duty for about 44 minutes with WiFi, Bluetooth, and flashlight all switched on
tecno-phantom-6-plus-battery
It drained 19% in 43 minutes.

RAM AND STORAGE

Even though the Tecno Phantom 6 Plus comes with 4GB of RAM, you are only left with about 2.57GB  — good enough to meet all your multitasking needs.
_dsc1087-02
On the Storage front, you have about 52GB left.

MULTITASKING EXPERIENCE? DO YOU EVEN NEED TO ASK?

A 4GB RAM combined with a 2.0GHz Helio X20 Deca-core MTK Chipset is enough to have all your Multitasking needs met. So, do not fret my brethren in tech, the Phantom 6 Plus has got you covered in this aspect.

REAR CAMERA REVIEW: LADIPO AS CAPTURED WITH THE TECNO PHANTOM 6 PLUS

You have the same settings found on the Camon C9, which means that Tecno Mobile did not include any PRO features like changing the ISO, exposure, etc.
You already know how the Phantom 6 Plus performs when it comes to its selfies, but what you don’t know is that the back camera also does a brilliant job both in outdoor and indoor environments. The colors appear sharp with no annoying color correction in place.
So, check out Ladipo as captured with the Phantom 6 Plus.

THE FINGERPRINT AND EYE SCANNER EXPERIENCE

You have the best of both worlds — The fingerprint sensor and the eye scanner technology.
The fingerprint scanner is so quick, just tapping the sensor is enough to unlock the device. However, the eye-scanner is another thing entirely. If you’ve been reading my reviews, you should know by now that the eye-scanner technology found on the Camon C9 only works in a particular light condition which makes it ineffective when you use it in different light conditions.

A MAJOR BUMMER ALERT!!

Kindly press play:

Lol, that was a warning sound, because what you are about to read might not augur well with some of you.
I noticed that the Phantom 6 Plus didn’t come with a couple of sensors like the compass or magnetometer sensor all of which are needed for Virtual Reality
_dsc1067-02

OTHER FLAWS

I haven’t gotten any update notification, yet. But hopefully, I’d get it soon.
_dsc1108-01
UPDATED: The Phantom 6 Plus does come with a gorilla glass 3 protection, but a gorilla glass 3 will still scratch under wrong circumstances hence the reason they put a screen protection.

BENCHMARKS

As expected, the Phantom 6 Plus excels excellently well in the benchmark tests.

GIF CONCLUSION

A song that perfectly describes  the Phantom 6 Plus:
ezgif-com-optimize

OVERALL

The major highlight of the Phantom 6 Plus is the fact that it is a powerful device, very powerful as a matter of fact. Other aspects also did well save the sensors, but would you be willing to overlook it given that Virtual reality isn’t really a thing in this part of the world?

  1. Steve says:

The beast is finally here. The lack of gyroscope and incompatibility with VR is the only thing I don’t like about this device.

  2. Omar says:

The lack of those sensors will raise a tiny few eyebrows, but it isn’t a deal breaker for most.
Nice review, it really is a beast of Tecno’s nation.

  3. Techmate says:

Tecno should just forget about the eye print scanner. if it works under select conditions then it doesn’t work 100%.
The fingerprint scanner is more than enough security.

    1. kumar says:

it doesn’t hurt to have multiple securities. The eyeprint scanner on my canon C9 works quite well.

  4. Tee says:

how hard is it to make a perfect phone?? i like the UI and the performance, but a phone without some essential sensors just kills the vibe.for a phone at that price, i expected more…..
(p.s i think you should use cpu-X and sensorbox for android to test sensors)
(p.s.s why you say you no photogenic???? ah lawve yhor zelfies!)

  5. Kelvin says:

The phone is a beast for sure. 4gb ram? Thumbs up Tecno. I love everything about it, plus MT you’re really cute. The battery is well, ok.
All these bad phones are just coming when Naija is in recession. Smh.
    I can’t see my comments.

  6. victor says:

still a great device #the BEAST of Tecno ‘Nation’ (reminds me of the fire nation in avatar) i’m still wondering how well things will go with the phantom 6 since it lacks the fingerprint scanner and is stuck with eye print wahala…….mhmm

  7. Kelvin says:

Dope phone. Sleek and beautiful. MT you’re really cute.
The phone surely retains its name; The Beast. All these bad phones coming in recession sef

    1. Kumar says:

wrong time to release it abi?
Pocket dry. I go buy am, its a matter of when.

  8. pWilliams says:

hmmmm….kudos tecno….una try Wella with that one.
    tecno’ no1 fan

  9. Stephen says:

“Tecno C Series” is quite awesome when it comes to Camera. Qudos to Tecno.

  10. prime says:

Abeg u cute jor….. Sooon I go dey sing ‘your number by another Jay’ . Anyways I still can’t get over the tecno name…. Terrible. Buh it looks like a nice phone.
    Good review as always.

  11. Behankey says:

Beat review of the Phantom 6+ so far. Accurate and detailed. No phone is perfect but this is near perfection.

  12. ARTMEL says:

Is the screen 2,5 D? And please when are you doing the review of the Beauty (phantom 6)??
Otherwise very great review like always

    1. Techmate says:

      No its not 2.5D

  13. Scarycuteface says:

This phone has been reviewed many times. But I seem to like how this was laid down. Makes people who wanna get hold of the beast have a knowledge of what to expect. Nice review for an amazing phone.

  14. Victor Molokwu says:

They still had to flaunt the iris thingy on this…
For the price, This beast ain’t beastly enough

    1. Steve says:

Thank you! I don’t know why the hype is soo much. It’s a good phone, but for the price it isn’t good enough. This phone is over $300 for God’s sake.

  15. OlusegunAde says:

I think Tecno has improved on this one, although there is still room for improvement and they can still .get better. Not a bad review.

  16. Zita says:

Yayi! Time to blog shop. It’s more than good enough phone but the price is hanging a little bit high

  17. But misstechy i thought phantom 6plus came with corning gorilla glass3 protection

    1. MissChlorine says:

She said it does, however, that doesn’t mean it will not scratch if you put it through undue stress.

  18. Pozaa says:

    Nice review..

  19. Kumar says:

    yes it does.

  20. Chai…Upon all the Hype, so na this scrab tecno called BEAST…. Yecno fall my hand and my leg join.. Imagine a whole phantom six with no corning gorilla glass protection… I go just kukuma wait for oue Dear Infinix Zero 3. coming this December..

    1. Norman says:

Am sure she made a mistake. Its clearly stated on the tecno site that both phantoms have gorilla glass 3. The screen protector is just for extra protection since even gorilla glass breaks eventually.

    2. Ademola says:

It does have a protection. She stated it. I have the 6 now

  21. george jinn says:

since MissTechy went there,i would go too. Before i continue i would like to say this was another sweet review #OnPoint #CarryGoMT.I dont know why most of the major andriod phone OEMs in Nigeria compromise on sensors.2 years ago i was forced to buy a cheap windows phone(lumia 630) because i needed a phone with a proper gps, proximity and gryroscope sensor that actually worked-not just on paper. This is not the 1st time Tecno is doing this.I know because of all 3 Tecno phones have used, none had proper location tech(sensor).Eg.Open ur maps and try pining to current location.Same with Infinix;i got a Note2.I downloaded pokimon GO and i was very disappointed because yes the Note 2 has sensors for location but do they work as they should?maybe its because we dont use these sensors in “this part of the world”.

  22. KingAbsolute says:

I love everything about this beast, the RAM, the UI, screen size and resolution, the iris scanner, battery performance, etc.
I just wish I’ll get my hands on one, a phone you’ll look at and it’ll quench your hunger of getting another phone for a long period of time.
I’ve even dreamt of myself and the ‘beast’.
Tecno really tried, they out-did themselves here.

  23. Cypher says:

Tecnos huawei mate 8 in shorts … Have they been delivered from their systems port ram management yet??? ?

  24. Oj_Ina says:

I wonder what tecno is Gonna produce next,am sure the price is gonna be Higher,4gb Ram and With a finger print and eye scanner technology….Mehn Infinix Note3 Who U epp ???

  25. Oj_Ina says:

I wonder what tecno is Gonna produce next,am sure the price is gonna be Higher,4gb Ram and With a finger print and eye scanner technology….Mehn Infinix Note3 Who U epp ???…..Oh 1 more thing tho, I wasn’t Tha amazed with the Ui interface But I was impressed by the colour sha, come to think of it who doesn’t like chocolate ???

  26. Lighternote says:

Great device… If you ask me

  27. Kay says:

This not that impressive for a “flagship”. 😐

    1. kumar says:

      Are you for real?
4Gb RAM, Deca-core processor, 64GB ROM, 4050MAH, 21 Mp rear camera. premium build quality, fingerprint scanner. This sir is impressive.

    2. Karen says:

What else do you want, mate?Similar flagships from other major brands don’t even come close .

  28. ỌBÁDÁRÀ says:

… WELL, THE HYPE IS OVER, SO IMHO, THIS IS NOT A BEAST. THE 4GB RAM SHOULD GIVE NOTHING LESS THAN 3GB AVAILABILITY, THE SPEAKER COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER, THE CAMERA COULD AS WELL PACK OIS/EIS. ONE OTHER THING THAT WILL BE MAKING ME RUN AWAY FROM TECNO DEVICES IS THE LACK OF FIRMWARE/SOFTWARE UPDATES WHICH MAKES INFINIX Ọ̀GÁ AT THE TOP FOR TECNO.
THIS GOT ME “So, do not fret my brethren in tech, the Phantom 6 Plus has got you covered in this aspect.” ITS TECH-SCRIPTURAL TO SAY – MY BRETHREN IN TECH!
I LOVE THE LANGUAGE USE. CAN WE HAVE THE VIDEO REVIEW?…

    1. Ademola says:

Tecno are already churning out updates. Do you know that this device and its sister, the beauty have dedicated key for updates?

      1. jerrywatago says:

ademola can u rephrase ur question

  29. PlumBae says:

I think the phone does really great, save for the sensors part….but hey, I’m not even noticing any difference. Kay, there are many flagships in the world of Tecno….many.

    1. Kumar says:

      Their flagships are released yearly.
The predecessor of phantom 6 is the phantom 5 released September 2015.

    2. jerrywatago says:

      lol…many?? name them for me

  30. Alli Abiola says:

No VR Support? they just lost an intending buyer 😉 #itsallisay

    1. Ademola says:

This brand is just evolving. They are not there yet but striving hard to get there. You have to get your hands on this device to actually see the beasty nature of this phone. Maybe next one will have the VR.

    2. jerrywatago says:

      get the universal VR then

  31. Techmate says:

This phone shows Tecno is taking any chances. They really mean business you actually need to see the phone up close and personal to really appreciate how much effort was put into making it the beauty and the beast that it is.

  32. Ademola says:

Beasty review for a beast of phones. Rugged, aggressive. You just have to appreciate the evolution of Tecno.

  33. TEE says:

    How durable are Tecno phones?
I am thinking of getting one over a samsung (j7 prime)phone so I need to know about the durability.
The specs are great but i need to be sure that I wont be making any repairs on the phone for at least 1 year

  34. Clever says:

To every phone, It depends on how best u take care of it,I have used tecno p5 for almost 2 years which I gave to my brother nd he is also using this same phone close to 2 years now without a single fault, so for durability, I can attest to that.

    1. nelsonajah says:

those their phones that year was really strong..tho pple say it doesn’t last then i wondered how they handle it. tecno is a good brand.

  35. Burmese says:

yea they are evolving to be one of the best, really anticipating what they gon do next

  36. Ivvy says:

from my experience their phones are durable, you just need to play ur part

  37. Haykay says:

The phone will develop issues like loss of speed charge, the ear piece speaker will stop working and sometimes might blank off. I had changed it twice at a Tecno Calcare center. More of software issues
I feel Tecno should go back to review this product themselves.

    1. Steve says:

This is exactly what’s happening to my Infinix Hot S which I bought less than three weeks ago. This is the last time I’m buying from these useless Transsion brands.

    2. nelsonajah says:

thats the first time am hearing this abt the phone..no warranty ?

  38. sam says:

Comment Text*Nice review, but I was wondering why you had to on the flashlight while running those test, because it really uncalled for.

    1. lovelychic4 says:

oh…i didnt see that o…misstechy should come n anwser this techy question o lol

  39. nelsonajah says:

this was best selling last year..no doubt

  40. Tecmobs says:

This is the best Tecno device so far
