No device is perfect including the Tecno Camon C9, but does it have enough redeeming features? You can decide for yourself after reading this review.
THE TECNO CAMON C9 REVIEW
BOOT TIME TEST
Kicking off this review is our boot test. How fast does the C9 power on? Thanks to the many animations on the C9, you’d have to wait for about 52 seconds to power on the device.
Powering off also takes about 13-seconds
Which places the C9 high in the chart (negative high, that is).
BEAUTY ON THE INSIDE.
Even though the C9 comes with a 5.5-inch display, you have a screen size of 4.59 inches and a huge DPI of 480 which offers gorgeous image output that is lovely to look at indoors.
Whereas, when you take it outside you will need to increase the brightness to the highest level, otherwise, you might not be able to see the screen.
THE UPGRADED HIOS
Remember how I complained about the buggy HiOS UI on the Boom J8? Well, they have actually fixed some of these bugs on the Camon C9. Although there are still a few grammatical errors I noticed like Browsering settings, but it is much better compared to that on the J8.
You also have your regular HIOS UI, which might leave you liking it or not.
For me, there were some parts I loved, like the boot UI and the notification panel UI
There is also a camera app on the home screen.
SMART COVER ON FLEEK
I talked about the smart cover in my unboxing, but I didn’t realize that you have 3 windows instead of 1.
The music window to control your music playlist and the flashlight window, to easily access the flashlight without unlocking your phone.
BLOATWARE OF LIFE
Tecno Mobile is going the Xiaomi way, and by that, I mean, they are really serious about building a community and this is evident with the inclusion of the Hi account manager in the settings.
However, with this comes the inclusion of some apps that cannot be uninstalled, actually, you have two major apps – The Tecno Spot, a web-based app that redirects you to Tecno’s forum and the Hi apps – Hi apps include: Hi manager, Hi launcher, Hi font, Hi Theme, and Hi wallpaper.
By the way, Tecno has included the T-band app. However to use this, you will need to register
Lastly, You have other apps like Asphalt Nitro, Carl care, Palm play, BBM, Puzzle pets which can be uninstalled.
THEY CALL IT MICRO INTELLIGENCE ?
I came across a setting called Micro Intelligence and permit me to use this word – Wahalai! This came to mind:
However, Tecno’s micro intelligence feature only contains some few settings which are not foreign to you. You have the gesture unlock which has been named as “Quick start” on the C9.
There is the tap to wake, cover to silence, music gesture and flip to mute. However, the only new thing Tecno added is the screenshot feature which allows you to take a screenshot with three fingers, just like so?
Psst, It is a really cool feature.
NOTIFICATION SENSOR ON TOP? THAT’S SO 2015: SAY HI TO THE HOME BUTTON NOTIFICATION SENSOR.
Tecno did away with the notification sensor on the top right corner of the device, instead, you have the home button serving as the notification sensor, kinda similar to the Boom J8
Do I like it? Given the fact that it is quite obvious as opposed to the really tiny regular notification sensor, I’d say:
Now, imagine if Tecno added the function to change the notification color ??
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU COMBINE A 3000mAh battery WITH A FULL-HD DISPLAY?
Most people will say yes to a full HD display, but do you know that they take up more battery power? In case you didn’t know, consider yourself enlightened ?.. However, the Marshmallow’s battery saving feature (Doze) in addition to the HiOS made the battery life way above average and because I believe so much in tests, I carried out 2 tests to see how the battery fares.
First, is the screen/Hotspot on test: I fully charged the battery and left the screen on, I also put on the data and the hotspot
Second test: I played a 1hr 58minutes movie with the battery at 100% and data switched on.
On screen test/Hotspot test:
Movie on screen test
CAMON C9 BATTERY TEST CHART:
HOW FAST DOES IT CHARGE?
It takes about 2 hours plus to fully charge the C9.
THE IRIS SCANNER?
I am tempted to add, ain’t nobody got time for that, but I won’t ?. So, I tried out the “Iris scanner” on the C9 (Which really isn’t an Iris scanner but an eye verifier) and to be very honest, I doubt if it will be a constant feature you will use, because by the time it is done recognizing your eye, you would have done all of these:
Lol, okay I am exaggerating, but it takes quite a while (about 4 seconds) to recognize your eye and the scanner doesn’t recognize in all lighting conditions.
Although the C9 comes with 16GB storage capacity, you have about 9.34GB left. After installing about 2 heavy games, Real racing and Fahrenheit along with some benchmark apps I had about 1.38GB left.
ALL ABOUT THAT BASS
The C9 has a great audio quality, and the hump on the back also helps to ensure the audio is not obstructed.
By the way, when you buy the C9, you will see 3 songs from various artists like Niyola courtesy of the boom player. Of course, you can delete if you are not into Nigerian songs.
HOW GOOD IS THE MULTITASKING?
Above average, I made a multitasking video (but later converted it to GIFs) to test this. This is me playing about 2 heavy games as suggested by Harry :). They include -Real Racing 3, Fahrenheit, other apps include Chrome browser and the picture app.
The two games performed well without any lag, they also resumed from where I left it off when I move to another app.
Same thing as the Chrome and the picture apps.
HOW HOT IS THE C9 UNDER EXTENSIVE USE?
While playing games and using the device extensively, I noticed that the C9 is rather impressive in the temperature department. It doesn’t get overly hot. Of course, when you put on the hotspot while playing games (That is what I did), you will notice the device is warm but other than that, quite impressive.
WHAT SENSORS ARE ON THE C9?
You have just three, the light, accelerometer and proximity sensors.
You have some UI effects like the ability to change the wallpaper with just the touch of a button and the ability to free memory all from your home screen.
DOES IT SUPPORT USB OTG?
Of course, it would be a crime if it doesn’t.
None at all during the duration of using the device.
WHAT OTHER FLAWS ARE THERE
Not really a flaw, but during 4G only mode, voice calls are not supported.
I saw another not-a-flaw-but-hilarious-discovery when setting up the device.
I also didn’t like the fact that the Hi manager was always on the notification panel. (Update: You can disable this by heading over to Hi manager, select the settings icon on the top right corner, then toggle off Notification bar display).
Tecno’s inbuilt browser is a piece of work, but this can be easily fixed by installing your favorite internet browser. Finally, I don’t know if this is restricted to just my device, but I can’t access my SIM toolkit and this applies to both SIMs
BENCHMARKS AND CHARTS
The Camon C9 performed quite well in the benchmark tests
See the full benchmarks in the chart below:
Sound, Display, and Multitasking got me like:
However, the slight grammatical errors and the gimmicky “iris scanner” got me like:
Now over to you.
Based on the review, what do you think the overall conclusion should be?
