FOR THOSE WHO LIKE IT FAST, THE S7 DOESN’T DISAPPOINT.
If you were expecting to wait for a considerable amount of time to power on the S7, I am sorry to disappoint because it takes about 22 seconds to power on the S7
Powering off the device takes about 4 seconds.
THE GALAXY S7’s SCREEN COMES ALIVE AND NOT JUST IN THE NIGHT TIME
Though the Galaxy S7 sports the same display as the 5.1-inch, QHD Super AMOLED screen found on the Galaxy S6, DisplayMate has said that the screen on the Galaxy S7 is the best on any smartphone.
Why? The Galaxy S7 has a Maximum Brightness that is 24% higher than the Galaxy S6, it also has a better performance in high ambient light, which ensured that all the colors came alive and not just in the night time.
On a bright sunny day, the screen is capable of peaking much higher – up to 470cd/m2 –making you use the phone in almost any condition.
You can also choose from several display options, these displays will boost or lower contrast in certain applications versus others. For example, in the camera app, the Adaptive display will boost the contrast and brightness so that the camera viewfinder is easier to see in bright sunlight.
ALWAYS ON DISPLAY:
Another display feature that differentiates it from the S6 is the publicized Always on display. This ensures that you get to see your notifications without having to unlock your phone all the time. Super useful. The only thing that I’d wished for, is the ability to add to the notification list, but for now, you just have your clock, date, battery level, text message and missed call notifications
The super cool part about the always on display is that it doesn’t zap your battery. I did a test to see how much battery would be drained. See the result in GIF
I am sure most of you are like:
…But trust me, as I spent more time with the S7, I got used to glancing at my phone to check for the time without the need of unlocking it.
SAMSUNG’S TOUCHWIZ IS A WHIZZ
Samsung stuck with the TouchWIZ UI, however, instead of the cloggy UI we are used to seeing, the TouchWiz version found on the S7 is super fast and fluid. Although if you are a new Galaxy S series user, it might take a while getting used to the button placements on the S series
The Notification area has been tweaked a little, It starts with a scrollable line of quick toggles on top, then a brightness slider and the Quick connect button.
See more UI screenshots below:
OH SAMSUNG, YOU MADE ME LOVE GETTING MY DEVICE WET.
#TrueStory, I was caught under a rain and instead of hiding my Phone, I used my S7 to cover the part of hair I didn’t want to be affected by the rain (futile effort, but you get the drift)
Samsung rectified the ‘oversight’ made in the S6 and the S7 is better thanks to this rectification. The IP68 certification means the device is dustproof and water resistant to depths of 1.5m for a maximum of 30 minutes, and Samsung has achieved this without the need for fiddly plastic covers on the headphone socket and charging port thanks to a protective used to prevent moisture from seeping in. To further test this, I carried out some real life tests, (Yes, I said I was going to do a 20-minute test, but I felt nobody would willingly put their device in water for 20 minutes, hence this test.) I showered with the S7, shared my food with him, washed and swam with him .
Do watch it and let me know what you think.
MULTITASKING ON THE S7 IS AN ORGASMIC EXPERIENCE!
If you haven’t used the latest Galaxy series, you might not understand what I am talking about at first, but let me break it down. The Galaxy series allow you multitask to the extreme and it is not different with the S7.
For example, you have your one-handed mode, which reduces the screen size so you can operate it using one hand (duh!)
You also have support for multi-window which allows you to run two apps side by side
Finally, there is the pop-up view that will allow you put up more than 3 windows on the screen at once.
THE GALAXY S7 FOR THE GAMERS DEM
The Samsung Galaxy S7 is the go-to device for gamers!
Thanks to it 4GB RAM and the eight cores with four running at 2.6GHz and other four at 1.59GHz paired with a Mali T880 GPU, the games run smoothly with no hint of slowdown. Watch the video where I tested how well the S7 managed its RAM.
Asides all that juiciness, you also have a game launcher – a semi-new feature. What Game launcher will do for you is to ensure you can take a screenshot of your gameplay, record live footage and multitask effectively. Also with the Game launcher, you can disable notifications during gameplay so you are not disturbed when that game becomes too intense.
You also can lock the navigation keys which ensure you don’t press the wrong button during an intense gameplay.
When playing intense games on the S7, it felt noticeably warm at most times.
MUCH ADO ABOUT THE S7’s CAMERA:
To ensure I covered all that the S7’s camera has to offer, I made another post that talked about the many features found on the S7. Click here to read about it.
BLOATWARE & PRE-INSTALLED APPS
You have a few Microsoft apps pre-installed (MS Office, OneDrive with 100GB for 2-years, Skype, and others). S Health is on board for your health needs, it comes fully loaded with the heart rate and blood oxygen sensors.
You don’t have the default music app :(, but the Google play music comes through for you.
You also have other Samsung apps like Samsung Gear, Galaxy Entertainer. Samsung Members, Samsung Pay, S Voice, Papergarden, Knot, Shahid (which is totally useless because it is in Arab) and S Planner.
HOW FAST IS THE FINGERPRINT
Pretty much fast. It takes less than a second to unlock your phone.
Plus no more swiping, all you need to do is to hold your finger on the home button. Although, if your finger is wet, you might need to use whatever lock pattern you set as the S7 won’t recognize your finger.
I read about how the S7’s fingerprint can sometimes be inaccurate, but I honestly feel they weren’t really registering their finger the right way. So, here is my 2 cents on how to register your finger for better accuracy
I didn’t like the fact that if I got my fingerprints wrong in five consecutive attempts, the smartphone will be locked for 30 seconds and you cannot even use your PIN to unlock it during this time.
With the Android 6.0 on the Galaxy S7, you can literally use your fingerprint to sign into any account. This will do away with the constant need to input password every time.
As expected, the Samsung’s Exynos 8890 chipset is paired with an LTE Cat. 9 which will give you a maximum transfer rate of up to 450 Mbps for downloads (50 Mbps uploads. The S7 made GLO look so good despite the connectivity problems. NFC support is present and is used for Samsung Pay.
The only downside is that the S7 doesn’t come with an IR blaster and at the bottom is still only a micro-USB 2.0 port, so users have to forego USB-C, USB 3.1, MHL 3.1 or a DisplayPort.
FAST CHARGING ON FLEEK!
The Galaxy Samsung S7 truly defines what a fast charging feature on a phone should be even without the quick charge 3.0.
The Galaxy S7 comes with a 10-watt power adapter, which supports quick charging. It charges your device from 0% to 100% in just 70 minutes. So, when your battery is dead, you can get about 50% battery life within just 30 minutes of charging time. I must point out that for the fast charging feature, Samsung has said your device might be warm when charging and this is very true. Although you can turn this off by heading over to the settings, battery and disable fast cable charging. You can watch the Youtube video where I demonstrated how the fast charging works along with the temperature level of the device afterward.
POWER TO THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE
The smartphone packs a 3,000mAh power bank, a substantial increase over the S6’s 2,550mAh, The device can last up to a day without extensive use, with extensive use, I get about 6 hours of usage (This include putting on the Bluetooth for my level u headset, mobile data and running some minor games). You can also watch the video.
Asides from the power saving mode, which is very impressive when it comes to saving your battery juices, You also the ultra-power mode that is effective for those times you have just 2% left with no charger in sight.
You’re hot then you’re cold
Like I said earlier, the S7 can get a little warm when charging, but this can be turned off if you so wish.
However, the rate at which the S7 cools off is amazing thanks to the cooling feature.
When it comes to the audio you have a slightly above average performance thanks to the fact that the Galaxy S7 has a mono speaker. One thing I didn’t care for was when playing a game, I always try not to put my hands on the mono speaker so as not to completely silence the audio
You have also the opportunity to tweak the sound thanks to the Adapt sound and the Sound Alive feature.
WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH ALL THAT STORAGE?
The Samsung S7 comes with a 32GB inbuilt storage with the system taking about 5.27GB storage which leaves you with 27GB storage. Asides from the internal storage, you have your MicroSD card slot expandable to 200GB – a welcome development given that the S6 lacked this important feature.
MEET KNOX, SAMSUNG’S SECURITY FEATURE
Knox is Samsung’s blanket term for security across the Galaxy S7 line and goodness! It is terrific! So how does Knox work? When you install Knox, it would ask you to register your device
Once initialised, My Knox will offer you a secure app ecosystem – it’s a bit like having two phones in one with a way to keep business separate from pleasure. Another thing that made this super cool for me is the ability to lock your device remotely should it be lost or stolen (Nothing new, right?) But the way My Knox delivered his was superb. See the image below for more explanation. (P.S: Read what I wrote on the phone screen X_X)
There is the Smart manager that ensures you manage your device with just a touch of a button.
The ability to download fonts and apply themes is also something most people would love!
There is an Easy mode for those parents who are not used to the TouchWiz. You have direction lock, which enables you to draw directions to unlock your device.
And for those who are moving to the Galaxy S7, the S7 has something called the Smart switch mobile that would help you quickly transfer stuff to your new phone.
Lastly the scrolling feature
Trust me, I am just scratching the surface, there are a lot of stuff of features that can’t be covered in this post.
The USB OTG transfer is very fast compared to others I have tried, Plus it also allows for reverse charging.
Every phone has flaws and the S7 is no exception. For one, the S7’s back is a fingerprint magnet
Another is the fact that you only have one SIM support in this age of dual-sims 🙁
Lastly, I don’t know if it is only on my S7 variant, but I noticed that the USB Debugging is automatically switched on with no means of switching it off.
Will update this article once I have figured it out.
The different chips obviously come with matching GPUs, the Adreno 530 in the Snapdragon package, and the Mali-T880 MP12 in the Exynos variant,I have the Exynos variant. However, regardless of the chipset, the Galaxy S7 comes with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. So how did it fare? See the results below
MY GIF CONCLUSION:
Is the one of the best smartphones in 2016?
Should your response be
Evidently, this is one of the best phones in the world right now, and if you are looking for that phone that fits your hands perfectly and still offers you the best of every world, the Samsung S7 is your sure bet. It’s about small but substantial changes — like water resistance, expandable storage, a beautiful camera — that make the Galaxy S7 a phone worthy of your money.
