A big shout out to my 50 Shades of Grey + romance novel fans, we have another person (sorry, thing) who is addicted to our favorite genre!
Google feels that in order to make its AI more personable and less boring, there is a need to make it read erotic romance novels like Jacked up and Fatal Desire to name a few. They actually fed it a whopping 2,865 romance novels, so it can improve its conversational skills. According to Buzzfeed’s reporter Alex Kantrowitz, the engineer in charge of the project – Andrew Dai- explained that “In the Google app, the responses are very factual. Hopefully with this work, and future work, it can be more conversational, or can have a more varied tone, or style, or register.”
After reading these books (I would need a list of the books, though), it was given a task of writing a romantic novel which it did, excellently well. It also compared its work with the text from the books so as to know where to improve itself.
Why Romance books? You might ask, Andrew Dai believes that:
Romance novels make great training material for AI because they all essentially use the same plot to tell similar stories with different words. “Girl falls in love with boy, boy falls in love with a different girl. Romance tragedy.” By reading thousands of such books, the AI can detect which sentences contain similar meanings and gain a more nuanced understanding of language. Romance novels work better than children’s learn-to-read books, since they offer a broad range of linguistic examples for the AI to draw from.
Side note: Now that Google’s AI knows how romance stories work, don’t you think hearing some words might make it *coughs* never mind.
