Microsoft will be the first OS to feature the middle finger emoji, Even though I am of the opinion that the upcoming Middle finger emoji is actually a cool way for angry people to express themselves. However, police and lawyers have issued a warning that using Microsoft’s middle finger emoji In UAE will land your ass in jail.
Yes, you would!
A criminal defense lawyer Abdullah Yousef al-Nasir told 7DAYS that “Sending a middle finger emoji on a smartphone or even sending a middle finger picture through email can put you in trouble. It’s an insult in the UAE and the law can punish you with either jail of up to three years or a fine of up to Dhs500,000 [$135.000 / €121.500].”
However, in order to be prosecuted, a complaint must be filed with the police by the person who received the image ( that person must be really wicked to go and report). So sending the emoji would not automatically land you in jail, al-Nasir said. He also added that if an expatriate is found guilty, they would likely be deported.
In the meantime, maybe I should send a mail to Microsoft for them to add an option to disable the emoji before it lands people into trouble.
*Scratches head* Who has Microsoft’s official email address?
