Please don’t tell me you thought I was referring to myself at first?
On a scale of 1 – 10, how surprised would you be if I told you that there is an eighteen-year-old kid somewhere that doesn’t own a Smartphone? If you chose 9, then you’ve not met Ann Makosinski, a female inventor that has never used a Smartphone and only recently bought a flip phone!
She is urging people to ditch their devices and do something else instead with their time. Makosinski, who has won global acclaim for inventing a torch powered solely by the heat from your hand, was speaking at TEDx Teen:
So why doesn’t she use a Smartphone? In her words:
You don’t think about it, but you will pick up your phone, you will check it like a couple seconds or a minute ever so often. And you think oh, I’m just briefly checking my phone. But if you add up every single minute, every single second you spend on your phone per day, it’s pretty terrifying. Really minimizing your distractions, so you can use your time most effectively is really important.
If there’s one thing I can leave you with today, for all of you who possess phones or even other devices, small electronic devices, it is that the next time you pick up your phone, think of all the possibilities off your phone and not on it.
Ann’s upbringing (her parents would refuse to give her toys or let her watch television as a kid so she can create her toys herself) and her detachment from smartphones has helped her think creatively, made her more sociable, and most importantly, made her the Inventor she is today.
Before you start having the *Abegi* mentality, ask yourself, if you don’t own a Smartphone today, would you die?
*Abegi* can be exclamatory, please, or an impatient excuse.
