Unsolicited Messages: You Can Make NCC Invoke a N5 million Fine On Your Telco.

Based on a new report, NCC has commenced the enforcement of the Do Not Disturb (DND) code, which ensures that Telcos stop sending unsolicited messages to their subscribers.

Henceforth, a N5 million fine has been stipulated for any breach of the directive. Also, the customers can ensure that any defaulting Telco is fined. How?

According to Professor Danbatta:

“If a consumer lodges a complaint to NCC that an MNO sends unsolicited text messages and the complaint from the consumer gets to us, we will ensure that the credit deducted from the consumers for these unsolicited text messages is returned to the consumer and we’ll also invoke provisions of the fine on the MNO which is N5 million.

My first reaction when I saw the comment:

All these Telcos are gonna learn today!

Then I reread his comment and saw this: “… And the complaint from the consumer gets to us.”

So, how can a consumer’s complaint get to NCC? A visit to NCC’s official website revealed 2 ways:

  1. Calling the NCC Contact Centre toll-free number with a valid complaint Ticket number from the Service Provider on 0800-CALL NCC (0-800-2255 622).  (I tried the number, but couldn’t get through after 10 trials).
  2. Filling the online complaint form on the NCC web portal www.ncc.gov.ng. (We know how long this process can take).

Anyway, if you are lucky enough to get through to NCC, can you let me know so I can update this article accordingly.
