… Because Recession

You may recall that Airtel was ordered to pay a certain Mr. Emmanuel Anene the sum of N5 million over unsolicited messages.

Now, the former Military Governor of Kaduna State, Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (retd) wants to sue MTN over unsolicited messages, and false deductions —  this time, MTN stepped on the wrong toes. ?

The former Governor claims that he had complained about the problem to no avail.

To prove his claims, he forwarded the last messages he received on Saturday:

The first reads:  ““Yello, you have downloaded the Callertune <CHECK YOUR ALERT> by TK SWAG for N50.00. This tune expires on 2016-12-09. To delete the tune, send del0733736”

The second: “Dear Customer, you have successfully subscribed to Laugh Out Loud and N50.00 deducted from your account. Your service will be renewed on 2016-11-18. To cancel, text  STOP LOL  to 55006. Enjoy!”

The issue for Umar isn’t about the deducted N50, but that the practice continued despite his complaints. He also noted that MTN stands to make about N3.5 billion (N50 x 70 million subscribers) on a weekly/monthly basis!

Now, imagine if 50% of Nigerians were to sue their Telcos:
