According to Counterpoint Research for Q3 2016, iTel became the number one phone brand in Africa surpassing Samsung for the first time, capturing 20% share of the total mobile phone shipments.
Apparently, the weak economic situation in some African countries like Nigeria has stirred up the need for feature phones. Not only did iTel become the number one selling mobile phone brand in Africa, it also remained the number one feature phone player in the African market. The demand for feature phones has also put Nokia in the top 5 list of Mobile Phone shipments.
When it comes to the Smartphone market, Samsung Mobile leads with a total of 34%, down by 20%. Other players like Tecno Mobile was able to capture only 6% market share, while Infinix captured 3% of the smartphone sub-segment.
Overall, Transsion holdings’ is the biggest mobile phone supplier in Africa for Q3, 2016. The phone brands under the company— iTel, Tecno, and Infinix — captured 34% of the overall mobile phone market.
