You shouldn’t be told that NTEL, formerly NITEL are set to start operations fully this month offering 4G LTE to Nigerians. However, instead of changing their old numbering plan – 0804, they are going retain it. The numbering capacity can only accommodate 10 million phone lines.
According to Mr. Kamar Abass, Managing director of Ntel, the assets acquired from NITEL included cellular spectrum/microwave frequencies; telecom operating licenses international submarine cables. They also acquired fibre and duct network that will enable them to offer better services to Nigerians.
The numbering shouldn’t be a problem to Nigerians as long as we can see the benefits of getting one or porting to one i.e. Cheaper data plan and voice service. If this is in place, I can see Airtel, MTN and Glo being demoted as side chicks, If you know what I mean.
